Your most familiar clothes are about to become the starting point for one of fashion's biggest conversations.

On November 5, The Metropolitan Museum of Art announced its spring 2027 Costume Institute exhibition: extraORDINARY: Fashion and the Poetics of the Everyday. The show will consider what happens when designers reconsider recognizable clothes and ordinary materials.

Think jeans, T-shirts and puffers, alongside paper, plastic and metal. The interest lies in how they are transformed, and how their earlier uses and associations remain part of the result.

The dates, and one important distinction

The Met Gala takes place on Monday, May 3, 2027. The public exhibition follows at The Met Fifth Avenue in New York, from May 9, 2027, through January 9, 2028.

The exhibition provides the theme around the Gala, but the evening's dress code and celebrity hosts have not yet been announced. This announcement is not a confirmed instruction for guests to wear jeans and T-shirts on the red carpet.

Why this feels close to home

At IWHS, we spend a lot of time thinking about the clothes we actually live in. This theme makes room for a conversation beyond the spectacular entrance: the familiar piece you style differently, the garment you care for, the everyday outfit that feels unmistakably yours.

Our takeaway is an invitation to look again. Before adding something new, try changing the proportions of an outfit you know, giving a favorite shoe a different role, or returning to a piece you have stopped noticing.

That is our styling interpretation, rather than a preview of what guests will wear. We will be watching for the official dress code next.

Which everyday piece in your closet deserves a second look?
