Miami: colour, confidence, and a calendar that peaks

Miami does not whisper. Colour is louder, silhouettes are bolder, and nobody apologises for either. It is also a genuinely international art city now, with a collector base that spans the Americas and a design scene that has outgrown the joke about pastel.

The city runs on its calendar. Fashion week in the autumn tells you what the region will be wearing; art week at the start of December turns the whole city into a fair. Both are dense, social and exhausting if you attempt everything. A short list and two good dinners beat a full map every time.

New York: density, discipline, and the long look

New York rewards depth. On any given Thursday there are more openings than one person can attend, which means the skill is editing, not finding. The wardrobe follows the same logic, precise, layered, built for walking, with one deliberate signal rather than five.

It is also the best city in the four for the long, slow look. Museum exhibitions here are given the space to make a real argument, and the ones that place fashion alongside sculpture and material research are worth crossing a borough for. Go on a weekday morning. Stay in one room longer than feels natural.

San Francisco: public, outdoor, and quietly serious

San Francisco puts its art outside. The waterfront alone carries a significant body of public work, and the guided walks the city runs through it are the most underrated cultural hour available, good company, good light, and a stretch of the city you thought you knew reading completely differently.

Style here is deliberately unshowy, which people misread as indifference. It is closer to editing: excellent fabric, considered proportion, nothing asking for attention. The city's rolling art weeks are worth checking close to the date, since the programme is added to throughout the season.

Austin: warm, inventive, and refreshingly unpretentious

Austin has the least ceremony of the four and, as a result, often the easiest conversations. The museum programming is ambitious and genuinely fun, late openings, all-day family events, sculpture that makes people laugh before it makes them think. Nobody performs expertise here, and that lowers the barrier for anyone new to looking at art.

The style register is warmer and more relaxed, with real craft underneath: leather, denim, handmade jewellery, a lot of things made by someone local you can actually meet.
